Requests for Incompletes

Requesting an Incomplete in the Department of Statistics

Please read the following before filling out the form:

The Department of Statistics requires a student requesting a grade of I in a Statistics class to state the part of the class that is incomplete, a time frame for its completion, and a reason for the incompletion. An impartial committee will review the request and provide a decision within two days of submission. The petitioner is responsible for contacting the Statistics Department office to obtain the results.

A grade of I is appropriate when (i) a course requirement has not been completed due to circumstances beyond the control of the student and (ii) the rest of the academic work is passing. For medical problems that prohibited the student from fulfilling a requirement of the course, a note from a doctor is required. The request may be supplied without the note, and the request (if acceptable) will typically be granted, conditional on the note being provided later. For other circumstances, supporting evidence, such as a note from an advisor, will be helpful to the petitioner's case.

The following is a list of reasons that are not acceptable:

  1. The course proved to be more time-consuming or difficult than expected.
  2. Work in other courses ended up taking too much time.
  3. Work or travel associated with a job ended up interfering with course work.
  4. Time conflicts prohibited contact with the instructor or TAs during office hours.
  5. The self-paced or lecture format of the course was unsuitable to the student.
  6. The student misunderstood the requirements or grading schemes of the course.
  7. The student wishes to avoid a low grade.
  8. The student wishes to retake the course at a later date.
Please do not request an incomplete if your reason falls into any of the above categories. Here is a printable version (PDF) of the form to request an incomplete in a Statistics class.
