About the Department
The OSU Statistics Department was founded in 1957, having grown out
of a statistical consulting unit in the College of Agriculture.
Today, the Department resides in both the College of Science and
the College of Agricultural Sciences
and has strong ties to many research departments at Oregon State
University as well as to the Corvallis branch of the Environmental
Protection Agency. There are 11 regular faculty members and about 40 graduate
students. The Department’s missions are to train graduate
students in the theory and practice of statistics, with particular
emphasis on those aspects that are central to practical applications;
to engage in research and other scholarly activities that will expand
knowledge in or promote the proper use of statistical methodology; and
to provide statistical service to other university units via
collaboration, consulting, and training. A particular emphasis of
applied training is in environmental statistics.
